Based on: The novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' by Thomas Hardy
Story: Michael Winterbottom transposes the tragic tale of 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' to modern-day India in this loose adaptation of the Thomas Hardy classic. Freida Pinto stars as Trishna, daughter of a rickshaw driver in a remote Indian village. When she takes a job at a nearby holiday resort, she meets and quickly falls in love with rich young British businessman Jay (Riz Ahmed), who offers her a job at his father's hotel in Mumbai. But when her father is severely injured in a car accident and her love affair with Jay begins to unravel, Trishna's life soon spirals into despair and hopelessness.
