Based on: The novel by Roddy Doyle
Story: Second part of Roddy Doyle's 'Barrytown' trilogy - preceded by 'The Commitments' and followed by 'The Van'. Dessie Curley (Colm Meaney) is a plasterer and, yes, likes getting plastered. With his wife Kay (Ruth McCabe), he rules over six lively children, one of whom, Sharon (Tina Kellegher), announces that she is pregnant. The family don't believe her story that the dad is a Spanish sailor, and suspicion falls upon a neighbour (Pat Laffan) who is just about to leave his wife. Set in the suburbs of Dublin, this was made for television but given a cinematic release after the success of 'The Commitments'.
