Film information

Based on: The works of Ernest Hemingway

Story: A collection of five films adapted from works by one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century, Ernest Hemingway. John Garfield stars in 'Under My Skin' (1950) as expatriate American jockey Danny Butler, who flees Italy after double-crossing ruthless gambler Louis Bork (Luther Adler). Accompanying Danny is his adoring son Joe (Orley Lindgren), who is blissfully unaware of his father's lies and corruption. In France Danny begins a relationship with a beautiful French nightclub singer (Micheline Presle) and buys a problematic racehorse that no one seems to be able to train. After Joe suggests that the horse has a future as a jumper, Danny converts him to the steeplechase and turns him into a consistent winner. However, when Bork shows up and tells him he must lose the big race or die, Danny must weigh his life against his son's faith that he has become a man of honour. Gregory Peck stars in 'The Snows of Kilamanjaro (1952)' as a renowned writer who is coming to the end of his life after being wounded while hunting in Africa. He ponders his life and tries to decide if there was any meaning to his past. The 1957 film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's classic 'Lost Generation' novel 'The Sun Also Rises' stars Tyrone Power as war veteran and writer Jake Barnes, who, despite immersing himself in the bohemian circles of 1920s Paris, continues to be obsessed by his ex-fiancée Brett Ashley (Ava Gardner). Rendered impotent by his war wound, Jake is condemned to watch her carousing with her new lover Mike (Errol Flynn), and as the doomed bohemians make their way to the Pamplona bullfighting festival, their lives begin to implode in a welter of alcoholism and recrimination. 'A Farewell to Arms' (1957) is a big budget remake of the first film version made in 1932. Rock Hudson stars as the American ambulance driver who falls in love with his nurse (Jennifer Jones) after being wounded in WWI, and deserts his post in order to be with her. Richard Beymer stars in 'Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man' (1962) as the young and restless Nick Adams, only son of a domineering mother and a weak but noble doctor father, who leaves his rural Michigan home to embark on an eventful cross-country journey. He is touched and affected by his encounters with a punch-drunk ex-boxer, a sympathetic telegrapher, and an alcoholic advanceman for a burlesque show. After failing to get a job as reporter in New York, he enlists in the Italian army during WWI as an ambulance driver. His camaraderie with fellow soldiers and a romance with a nurse he meets after being wounded propel him to manhood.
