Film information

Based on: The novel by John Buchan

Story: Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated British thriller, adapted from John Buchan's novel about a man on the run from threatening forces. Buchan's fast-paced story generated much excitement upon its release, helping to establish the chase narrative as a storytelling medium and providing fertile ground for Hitchcock to introduce trademark elements of his cinematic style. When Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), a Canadian holidaying in London, makes the acquaintance of a distressed woman, Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim), he is little prepared for the turmoil he will face when his new friend arrives at his apartment fatally wounded. Hannay finds himself in possession of a map and a cryptic message regarding '39 steps' and sets out to solve the riddle while attempting to elude a group of seemingly all-powerful pursuers.

Starring: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucy Mannheim, Godfrey Tearle, John Laurie, Peggy Ashcroft, Frank Cellier, Helen Haye, Miles Malleson, Gus McNaughton, Peggy Simpson, Hilda Trevelyan, John Turnbull, Jerry Verno, Wylie Watson
