I am profound deaf, my favourite programme is Most Haunting and I'm really frustrating that there only have subtitles twice on new series 9 and most of them have no subtitles on VIRGIN 1 (freeview) then suddenly not have Most Haunting on VIRGIN 1 which they haven't finish rest of series 9 programmes - why? Before xmas, I heard that new DVD release on 28th April which I was really looking forward to buy new Most Haunting Series 9 but unfortunately that I found out the DVD don't have subtitles which it make me ever more ANGRY and I feel they don't have deaf awareness.

Two films I wanted to watch the other day didn't have subtitles and they were both produced by Artisan! If someone were to get a real petition going requiring movie companies to put English subtitles on their DVDs, I would love to sign it!

I get really annoyed with the people who add subtitles, the majority of the movies would have censorship, or no subtitles for the lyrics when music is playing. Do they think we don't appreciate music as well ? Other times, when I do a comparison between actual closed captioning (black bars with white text) The closed captioning would have done a better job than subtitles (SDH) format. Censorship, missing swear words, not subtitling extactly as the dialog. Missing lyrics for the music, or other sound effects. Need to start complaining to the movie studios about this ... This is my rant.

Although my language is Dutch I can easily speak en read half a dozen European languages. But when I have to follow a movie with a dialogue in English, or even worse, in American, I only catch seventy to eighty percent of the meaning. And that's not enough to really enjoy the movie. With subtitles it goes up to almost 100 percent. A very big difference. For this reason I NEVER buy DVD's without subtitles, nor do I order them on sites that do not give information about subtitles (like Amazon!!!). Fortunately I discovered your website. I'm very, very grateful. Thanks for running this interesting website. And when possible, I'll give a helping hand. Because I'm sure all around the world there're many people like me. And we have to help each other!

I too am deaf and find it very frustrating that many current releases including a lot of interesting films made in Australia (I live in the UK) don't have subtitles. I even e-mailed Russell Brand's management team about the lack of subtitles on his dvd but have not had any response (typical!).

I'm not deaf but I thoroughly agree that it's a shame dvds aren't subtitled. It's already bad enough that people can't hear the beautiful soundtracks (Lord of the Rings,Kingdom of Heaven, Out of Africa,Star Wars, Harry Potter, the old Hollywood musicals...). They should at least be allowed to follow the story. I'm Portuguese and though I read English much as my mother language, it's a bit difficult to follow the dialogues. With subtitles it's much easy and interesting. I usually buy dvds from Amazon, but lately they have no information about it and so I don't order them. It's a pity because sometimes they have very good prices, and I don't have to wait for them to be sold in my country. The same happens with TV serials.(Grey's Anatomy, Bones...)

I live in Australia and find that there are quite a few DVDs that I like that they just can't be bothered subtitling (e.g. Reservoir Dogs - even the "special edition" has all these extras but NO SUBTITLES). I think there is an unwritten assumption by these people that only "oldies" are hearing impaired, so if it's not an "oldies" movie, why bother? Thankfully, the situation is better in the U.K., so now I just order from overseas (which is often cheaper anyway). Thanks also for your great site.

I live in New Zealand, and my wife is profoundly deaf. We have always enjoyed English programms on TV with subtitles, and when they started to appear on DVD we were really happy. We are now really angry when, having purchased boxed sets which clearly state that subtitles are available, they are not!! Surely this is false advertising, and must be subject to some consumer protection legislation? I am going to raise this with the NZ Commerce Commission.

Yes I have several favorite movies "Ernest the movie" and other movie I don't remember, that I love to watch it when I was young. It used to show Closed Captioned on t.v. Until it updated into DvD and now there's no caption or subtitles in it. It was so fusturated for me. Since it my favorite movie. I know it is the law that it has to have all of the captioned, subtitles in any movie, t.v., and more. I have research some in internet about Law passed in Closed Captioned and subtitle for the deaf. Well please help get this new law pass to get more help provide for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and anyone who love to watch with subtitle/c.c.

Thanks.

I am glad I found this site :-). At first I thought it was a site that would put subtitles on DVDs! (well, we can dream can't we!!). That's probably not legally allowed. I am utterly annoyed (to say the least) that it is legally allowed to discriminate deaf and HOH people. I am quite severely hard of hearing. The funny thing is that I am black and of Muslim background althought I don't consider myself Muslim. These are protected by law. Nobody could do anything to discriminate me on these 2 things. However, being deaf, some heartless boffins decided that we are nobodies and failed to implement laws to protect our right to equality.

I wrote to Amazon the other day asking why their DVDs don't display subtitle information. I am not asking them to put subtitles on - just tell me if there is or isn't subtitles on a given product. For crying out loud how difficult is that? I am sick of returning unsubtitled DVDs. I have a work to do and a social life!

I can't bring myself to say excatly how I feel. I'd need more swear words than our dictionary contains! To be honest nothing can explain how angry I am. The thought of going to my local HMV or Virgin and destroying any DVD without subtitles came to my mind many a time.

Wish list - I'd give an arm (and throw a leg in too) to get these DVDs with subtitles

- Glory
- Friday
- Any Battlefield Britain series
- Any Billy Connelly comedy
- Any Bear Grylls survival series
- Any Ray Mears series

There are gazzillions more but only these came to mind for now.

Finally, I would like to thank those who came up with this site. Just the idea that it is here makes me feel better. I suggest we start a petition in whichever country we live to make sure this pathetic discrimination stops. I live in England and I plan to start one.

Phew! What a relief to get this off my chest. Thank you.

I am a relatively new DVD subtitler for the hard of hearing, and have no 'formal' training. I have noticed that subtitles vary hugely. As an example, Casino Royale gets a good rating on your website, but to me the subtitles look a bit of a mess on screen. I am used to setting them centred on the screen. These ones move their position according to who is talking, and sometimes block more of the picture than I would be happy with. [If you have questions please post on the forum - Webmaster]

I am very annoyed that not enough dvds have subtitles, after all in this day and age you think it would not be a problem, obviously it is. I don't think enough thought is given to people who are hard of hearing or totally deaf, well the companies who put the films on the dvds should!

I live in the US and exercise on machines while watching DVDs. Subtitles are key. I assumed that the move towards the technology of DVDs was going to make it *easier to program subchannels of things. Come to find out, we were better off with VHS tapes and their close-captioning. I stick to VHS if its available: more subtitles. Of course they don't sell VHS anymore so its old movies only for now. EBay, here I come!

My granddaughter has looked forward to 'Follyfoot' after her mum told her how much she loved it. But prior to buying found no subtitles!! so one profoundly deaf child not only is disappointed but also says why??

I'm not hard of hearing, but my partner is French and while his standard of English is pretty good he finds that without English subtitles he misses things, especially in shows/films with regional accents. It's really sad that we can't watch my "dinnerladies" DVD together as he misses half the jokes and is constantly having to ask why I'm laughing. What's so hard about putting English subtitles on every DVD as standard anyway?
