Explanation of Ratings
Please note that this website is only concerned with ENGLISH subtitles.
References to "subtitles" below refer to ENGLISH subtitles.
These ratings are intended to represent a measure of value for money for people
who require subtitles on DVDs that they buy, relative to those who do not. For example,
will a deaf person who needs subtitles get as much out of the DVD as a hearing person
who does not need subtitles?
These ratings do NOT have any relevance to the number or amount of extra features on
the DVD. They do NOT reflect the quality of the movie or dvd-subtitles.com's
opinion or review of a movie title. They are relevant to subtitling ONLY.
Confirmed ratings
The following ratings are awarded based on information submitted by users of the website.
This information normally comes from people who own a copy of the DVD title in question.
This information is generally very reliable, however dvd-subtitles.com cannot guarantee
the accuracy of any submitted information, although all submitted information is strictly moderated.
Well subtitled
This rating is awarded to DVD titles where it is known that the DVD contents are extremely well subtitled,
in other words, either literally everything or very nearly everything on the DVD is subtitled. This means
the main feature and all the extras are subtitled.
Sometimes the Well Subtitled rating will be given to titles where all extra features are subtitled except
for one. This happens when the non-subtitled feature is deemed to be of little importance (such as a trailer).
This rating will often be awarded to DVD titles which have a subtitled main feature but have no extra features
at all. This is because by having no extra features, the DVD is effectively fully subtitled.
Partly subtitled
This rating is awarded to DVD titles where it is known that the main feature is subtitled, and also some,
but not all, of the extra features are subtitled.
This rating will often be awared to DVD titles where all extra features are subtitled except for one.
This happens when the non-subtitled feature is deemed to be very important - for example a commentary,
which is often 2 hour's worth of subtitling about the making of the main feature or DVD.
Main feature only
This rating is awarded to DVD titles which have extra features, and it is known that only the main feature
is subtitled. If there are no extra features, then the title will be awarded the SSS (Well subtitled) rating
as explained above.
Not subtitled
The main feature has no subtitles. Any titles awarded this rating will appear in the Hall Of Shame.
If the main feature has no subtitles, this rating will also be awarded even if there are extra features
that have subtitles. This situation is very rare, if it exists at all.
Unconfirmed ratings
These ratings are not submitted by website users but are initially awarded to DVD titles when they are
first added to the dvd-subtitles.com database. They are based on information supplied to DVD
retailers and is often the same information available on the back covers of DVD titles. This information
can be fairly unreliable and limited as it does not include subtitling information on extra features. In
many cases these ratings may be wildly inaccurate.
