Film information
Story: All six volumes of the series exploring the history of football. 'Origins' looks at the game's pre-history and traces how its unique rules were developed. 'Football Cultures' examines the sport's role within international culture, placing a special emphasis on the political effects and conditions of the 1998 World Cup match in which Iran played the USA. 'Evolution of the European Game' looks at developments in European soccer during the first half of the 20th century. 'European Superpowers' offers an overview of European football in the latter half of the 20th century, a period which saw the rise of a number of powerhouse teams. 'Brazil' considers the South American team's dominance in international football and includes footage of the legendary goal-scorer Artur Friedenreich. 'South American Superpowers' examines the impact that South American countries have had on international football. 'For Club and Country' looks at French football and at the superteams Juventus and Manchester United. 'The Dark Side' surveys some of the darker incidents in the game's history, such as hooliganism, the Munich aircrash and the Hillsborough disaster. 'Superstars' examines the careers of some of those players who have become international superstars, including Garrincha and Maradona. 'The Media' explores the changing relationship between football and the media, and includes interviews with George Best, Ronaldo and Jurgen Klinsmann. 'Africa' looks at the huge promise of African football, measuring this against its repeated failure to succeed at an international level. 'A Game For All' considers the history of FIFA and tells the story of Germany's successful bid to host the 2006 World Cup. Finally, in 'Futures', the focus turns to the game's recent successes in Japan and Korea.
