Film information
Based on: The novels by Wilbur Smith, Jack London and Robert L Stevenson
Story: A triple bill of literary adaptations. In 'Gold' (1974) Rod Slater (Roger Moore) becomes involved in a web of intrigue following a rock fall at a South African gold mine owned by Harry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland), in which general manager and veteran miner Frank Lemmer is killed. Hirschfield's managing director, Manfred Steyner, is plotting with financier Farrell (John Gielgud) to flood the Big Dyke, thus destroying the mine and raising the value of gold worldwide, and tricks Slater into excavating the seam of gold beyond the river. Meanwhile, Slater becomes passionately involved with Steyner's wife (Susannah York), unaware that the scheme hatched by her husband will result in his death. 'Call of the Wild' is a 1998 adaptation of Jack London's classic gold prospecting novel. Buck the dog has not had an easy life; stolen from his original kindly owners in California, he is mistreated and beaten before being sold to French Canadian guide Perrault. Taken to Yukon, Buck finds a place in Perrault's dog team, delivering messages to Dawson City. It is there that Buck is taken under the wing of John Thornton (Rutger Hauer) and his niece, Helen, who are off to search for gold in the Klondike. They are joined by widowed saloon owner Maggie and her son, Josh, and together set off to seek their fortune. 'Treasure Island' (1998) is an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure yarn. Young Jim Hawkins becomes involved in skullduggery on the high seas when ailing pirate Billy Bones (Patrick Bergin) arrives to stay at his grandmother's inn, 'The Admiral Benbow'. Bones is being hunted down by his former shipmates, who want to get their hands on a map revealing the secret location of famous pirate Flint's treasure. Bones gives Jim the map, and he is joined by Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney when he goes in search of the island where the treasure is hidden. However, also hot on the trail is rascally one-legged pirate Long John Silver (Jack Palance), posing as ship's cook and ready to call his fellow crewmen to mutiny when the time is right!
