Film information

Story: Double bill of classic gladiatorial Roman action blockbusters by director Anthony Mann; 'El Cid' (1961) is Mann's Oscar-winning epic starring Charlton Heston as the legendary 11th Century Spanish patriot El Cid, fighting to drive invading Moors from Spain. Sophia Loren co-stars as his seductive but duplicitous lover Chimene. However, their love is tested to its limits when he kills her father, she vows vengeance and he sets out on a crusade to rid Spain of its aggressors. 'The Fall Of The Roman Empire' (1964) is Mann's star-studded Hollywood epic re-telling the last days of the Roman Empire. Emperor Aurelius is poisoned by his son Commodus who succeeds him, only to bring the once mighty Empire to its knees through pestilence and war with the Barbarians. The set of the forum is said to be the largest ever built for a film, and Dimitri Tiomkin was nominated for an Oscar for his score.
