Film information

Based on: Real Events

Story: Docu-drama which recreates the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 which drew the United States of America into the Second World War. The film, released in 1943, was criticised at the time as a propaganda failure for not portraying the Japanese as wholly inhuman and, as a result, was heavily censored by the US War Department. The uncut version of the film opens with Uncle Sam (Walter Huston), an embodiment of America, arguing with Mr C (Harry Davenport), his conscience, about the possibility of an attempted Japanese invasion. The film then goes on to recreate, Hollywood style, the attack itself.

Starring: Walter Huston, Harry Davenport, Dana Andrews, Paul Hurst, George O'Brien (voice), James Kevin McGuinness (voice)

Cinematographer: Gregg Toland

Directed by: John Ford, Gregg Toland

Music by: Alfred Newman

Produced by: John Ford

Written by: Budd Schulberg
