Film information

Based on: The novel by Louis de Bernieres

Story: Double bill featuring two popular drama movies. 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' (2001) is a big budget Hollywood adaptation of the novel set on the Italian-occupied Greek island of Cephalonia during the 1940s. Captain Corelli (Nicolas Cage), an opera-loving mandolin player, finds the population resentful when he first arrives on the island. But soon his involvement with local beauty Pelagia (Penelope Cruz) helps him form a bond with the local community and he starts to question his own involvement in the war. The tentative love affair between Corelli and Pelagia is then tested by the brutal arrival of the Germans in 1943. 'Chocolat' (2000) is set in a small old-fashioned French town which single-mother Vianne (Juliette Binoche) arrives in with her six-year-old daughter, and opens up a chocolate shop. Vianne creates some mouth-watering sweets which inspire the usually dull villagers to indulge their temptations and experience some true happiness. But it is only when handsome stranger Roux (Johnny Depp) arrives in the village that Vianne begins to recognise her own desires.
