Story: Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) is a renegade adventurer with no allegiance to either side in the American Civil War. This makes him the ideal man to take control of a cattle drive which will journey right through the centre of some much fought-over land. However, when he is captured by a Confederate Colonel (Richard Widmark), he is forced to take his cattle to feed the famished troops in the South, a task that puts him within firing range of the Union Army.
