Film information

Based on: The play by Robert E. Sherwood

Story: Biopic tracing the life of American president Abraham Lincoln from his time as a young man in Kentucky to the election win that saw him move to Washington as the country's new leader. Soon after leaving his home in Kentucky, Abe (Raymond Massey) finds himself in New Salem, Illinois, and decides to reside in the town. He soon becomes involved in politics and is elected to the State Assembly but, lacking motivation, he later goes off to study law instead. When he meets and becomes involved with the ambitious Mary Todd (Ruth Gordon), however, she brings out in him the drive he needs to continue in the political world.
